In the past most people have gone to swimming pools for recreation. Who can't remember begging Dad and Mom to stop at a hotel with a swimming pool so that the kids could enjoy playing in it? Coming into the 21st century, though, more and more pools are being designed and constructed to help people become and stay fit.

In the past most people have gone to swimming pools for recreation. Who can't remember begging Dad and Mom to stop at a hotel with a swimming pool so that the kids could enjoy playing in it? Coming into the 21st century, though, more and more pools are being designed and constructed to help people become and stay fit.

A large reason why so many pools are built with fitness in mind is that swimming is a highly effective form of exercise. Not only is it an aerobic exercise comparable to walking or even running, but it is less stressful on joints because the water supports the body and reduces the force of impacts. To facilitate swimming for fitness, special pools have been designed, such as above-ground or inground lap pools.

A lap pool is very different from other swimming pools in that it is specifically designed for people seeking exercise and fitness by concentrating on swimming laps. Most lap pools are rectangular instead of utilizing the curvier designs favored by recreational pool owners. Plus, lap pools can be built as narrow as just one swimming lane.

Lap swimming is a gentle and effective exercise that can be done by most everyone. Fitness and muscle tone is increased while protecting joints. And it is a wonderful stress reliever.

Indoor lap pools offer versatility and space savings. They may be installed in a fitness room or another room and can double as a decorative feature indoors or out.

A current is a feature of many modern pools, both the elevated type and inground lap pools. Pools with this feature of a steady stream of water in one direction, which effectively creates an endless swimming pool for the swimmer. This not only facilitates smaller construction area for the pool, but greatly increases the effectiveness of the workout of the swimmer.

Lap pools built inground can be indoor or outdoor. With the indoor versions there is the obvious benefit of not having to be effected by outdoor weather and temperature changes, but this does not mean that outdoor lap pools cannot be used all year. Heated pools are enjoyed by both private homeowners and businesses, and they create a much more comfortable swim no matter the season.

The price of installing a lap pool varies, depending on the size of the pool and what features are included. As a general rule, the larger the pool, the more it will cost, and the price increases further with "add-ons" such as automated current and heating systems. Many, however, when considering their exercise and personal needs, find these installation costs to be a wise investment.
